The policy, decoded

ChatGPT Plus refunds: the official policy and the real exceptions.

The terms say "non-refundable." The help desk approves refunds daily. Both are true — here's the whole picture, based on OpenAI's own help documentation.

The baseline rule

OpenAI's consumer terms make subscription fees non-refundable: no prorated refunds for mid-cycle cancellation, no partial refunds because you stopped using it, no refunds because a new model made your plan feel stale. When you cancel, you keep Plus until the end of the period you paid for — that's the compensation.

The five exceptions that actually work

  1. EU, UK and Turkey — 14 days. If you subscribed on the website and cancel within 14 days of purchase, you're eligible for a refund under consumer-withdrawal rules. This is the strongest, most mechanical case. Details →
  2. Accidental purchases — 14 days. Wrong plan, accidental annual billing, subscribed twice, kid pressed the button. Generally eligible if you contact OpenAI within 14 days of the charge.
  3. Billing errors. Charged the wrong amount, charged after cancellation, charged during a free period. Refundable when verified — bring dates.
  4. Duplicate and unauthorized charges. Refundable after investigation regardless of the usual policy. Full guide →
  5. Extended outages. Rarely, sustained technical failure (24h+) has warranted goodwill credit or partial refunds. Weakest of the five; ask, don't expect.

How to submit the request (the only channel that works)

  1. Log in at chatgpt.com with the account that was charged. This matters — support verifies the subscription against your login.
  2. Open the OpenAI Help Center and click the chat widget bottom-right.
  3. Type "refund request." The system shows an automatic eligibility summary before connecting you to an agent.
  4. State your exception in one sentence with dates: "I was charged for the annual plan by accident on July 8; I intended monthly and am reporting it within 14 days."
  5. If approved, expect processing in 5–7 business days and a receipt by email.

What doesn't work

Emailing random OpenAI addresses, tweeting at support, asking inside the ChatGPT app itself, or filing a chargeback as a first move — chargebacks typically get the account banned and OpenAI contests them. And if Apple or Google billed you, OpenAI genuinely cannot refund you at all. Use the store route →

Improve a borderline case

For the discretionary cases (accidental, new-subscriber regret), three things raise approval odds: speed (day 2 beats day 13), low usage since the charge, and specificity (name the exception, give the date, skip the essay). Support agents process volumes of these; make yours the easy yes.

Bottom line: inside 14 days you have a real shot — near-certain in the EU/UK/Turkey, decent elsewhere with an honest accident story. Past 14 days, only billing errors and unauthorized charges move the needle. Either way, cancel renewal first.

FAQ

Plus refund questions.

What is OpenAI's official refund policy for ChatGPT Plus?

Subscription fees are non-refundable and there are no prorated refunds for mid-cycle cancellation. Exceptions: EU/UK/Turkey purchases cancelled within 14 days, accidental purchases reported within 14 days, billing errors, duplicate charges and unauthorized charges.

How long does a ChatGPT refund take?

OpenAI states approved refunds are processed within 5–7 business days, with a receipt emailed to the account address. Your bank may take a few more days to post it.

Does heavy usage kill my refund chances?

It hurts discretionary cases. The eligibility check weighs how much you've used the service since the charge — a 14-day EU/UK/Turkey withdrawal is strongest when usage is minimal.

Can I get a refund on the annual Plus plan?

Annual accidental purchases are the most commonly refunded 'oops' — people intending monthly who clicked annual. Report it within 14 days via the Help Center chat and say explicitly it was accidental.
