ChatGPT refunds: who qualifies, and exactly how to ask.

OpenAI's official line is "fees are non-refundable" — but the fine print has five real exceptions, and thousands of refunds are approved every week through the right channel. This guide shows you which door to knock on, what to say, and what to do when the answer is no.

Do these first

The 4-step refund play.

  1. Cancel auto-renewal right now.Settings → Subscription → Manage. This protects you from the next charge while you argue about the last one — and you keep access until the period ends.
  2. Identify who billed you.Check the charge descriptor on your statement: OPENAI = ask OpenAI; APPLE.COM/BILL = ask Apple; GOOGLE*OpenAI = ask Google Play.
  3. Gather your dates.Charge date, signup date, cancellation date, usage since the charge. Eligibility is mostly arithmetic — 14 days is the number that matters.
  4. Ask through the official channel, politely and specifically.Help Center chat while logged in. State the exception you qualify for ("accidental annual purchase on July 3, reported today") rather than a general complaint.

While you're here

Refunding because ChatGPT wasn't the right fit?

Don't re-buy the same problem.

A lot of refund requests are really "I picked the wrong AI." Before subscribing again — to anything — consider a workspace that includes ChatGPT-family models and Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity, so the next $20 can't be wrong: MultipleChat AI, free plan available, paid from $8.99/month.

FAQ

Quick answers.

Can I get a refund on ChatGPT Plus?

Officially, subscription fees are non-refundable — but there are real exceptions: EU, UK and Turkey buyers within 14 days of purchase, accidental purchases reported within 14 days, billing errors, duplicate charges and unauthorized charges. Purchases made through Apple or Google must be refunded by Apple or Google.

How do I actually request the refund?

Log in at chatgpt.com, open the OpenAI Help Center, and use the chat widget in the bottom-right corner. The system shows a quick eligibility summary before connecting you with an agent. Approved refunds process in 5–7 business days.

Does cancelling give me my money back?

No — cancelling only stops the next charge. You keep access until the end of the paid period. A refund of the current charge is a separate request with its own eligibility rules.

I subscribed on my iPhone. Can OpenAI refund me?

No. App Store purchases are billed by Apple, and only Apple can refund them — use reportaproblem.apple.com. The same logic applies to Android: Google Play purchases are refunded through Google.

What if the charge was unauthorized or duplicated?

That's the strongest refund case there is, and it works regardless of the usual policy. Report it to whoever billed you with dates and receipts. Only escalate to a card dispute if the biller refuses — a chargeback usually gets your OpenAI account banned.
