The store route

Bought ChatGPT on your phone? Apple or Google owns your refund.

If your bank statement says APPLE.COM/BILL or GOOGLE*, stop writing to OpenAI — they can't help even if they want to. Here's each store's actual process.

Apple App Store

reportaproblem.apple.com — the only door.

  1. Go to reportaproblem.apple.comSign in with the Apple ID that bought the subscription.
  2. Find the ChatGPT chargeTap "I'd like to…" → "Request a refund", choose the reason that's true — accidental purchase and unintended renewal are the common ones.
  3. Submit and wait 24–48 hoursSome approvals are instant; others take a day or two. Status shows on the same site under Check Status of Claims.
  4. Cancel the subscription separatelySettings → your name → Subscriptions → ChatGPT → Cancel. A refund doesn't stop future renewals.

Window: generally 90 days. Apple weighs purchase history and prior refunds — first-time asks with plausible reasons do best.

Google Play

48 hours self-serve, then the form.

  1. Within 48 hours of the chargePlay Store → profile → Payments & subscriptions → Budget & history → find the charge → Report a problem / Request refund. Often instant.
  2. After 48 hoursUse Google Play's refund request form (support.google.com/googleplay/answer/2479637). Explain the accident or fault plainly.
  3. Cancel renewal in the same visitPlay Store → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → ChatGPT → Cancel.

FAQ

App store questions.

Why won't OpenAI refund my App Store purchase?

Because Apple billed you, holds the money and owns the transaction. OpenAI literally cannot reverse an Apple charge. The same applies to Google Play — refunds follow the biller.

How long do I have with Apple?

Apple's request window is generally 90 days from the charge. Decisions are automated-plus-human, unexplained, and final-ish — but you can re-request with more detail.

What's Google Play's window?

Within 48 hours you can often self-serve the refund from the Play Store. After that, use Google's refund request form; developers can also grant refunds up to varying limits.

Apple refused. Am I done?

Not necessarily: re-request with a clearer reason (accidental purchase, child purchase, item not working), and if the sub renews you can still cancel future charges. For unauthorized charges specifically, Apple has a dedicated fraud path.
