The strong cases
Wrong charge? These refunds work even when "no refunds" applies.
Billing errors, duplicates and unauthorized charges sit outside the normal refund policy entirely — every biller refunds verified ones. The skill is documentation, not persuasion.
The four charge problems, ranked by strength
1. Duplicate charge — near-automatic
Two charges for one subscription period. Screenshot the statement, grab both receipt emails if they exist, report with dates. Nobody argues these.
2. Charged after cancellation — billing error
Your cancellation confirmation email is the whole case. Forward it with the post-cancellation charge date. This is why keeping that email matters.
3. Unauthorized charge — investigated, then refunded
Stolen card, account takeover, a family member's surprise. Report to the biller's fraud path: OpenAI Help Center chat ("unauthorized charge"), Apple's reportaproblem flow, or Google Play's unauthorized-transaction form. Change your password and payment method at the same time.
4. Accidental purchase — strong inside 14 days
Wrong tier, accidental annual, meant to cancel the trial. OpenAI's stated policy: accidental purchases are generally eligible if reported within 14 days of the charge. Speed is the whole game — the policy guide has the script.
The escalation ladder (use it in order)
- The biller's official channel — Help Center chat / reportaproblem / Play form. Resolves the overwhelming majority.
- Re-request with better evidence — one more pass with dates, receipts and the specific word for your case ("duplicate," "post-cancellation charge," "unauthorized").
- Your bank or card issuer — dispute/chargeback, last. Effective for true fraud; costly (account closure) for anything you actually bought yourself.
Prevention beats paperwork
Most "mystery" AI charges are forgotten renewals across multiple subscriptions. If you're juggling ChatGPT + Claude + others, one consolidated bill is easier to watch than three — that's a side benefit of workspaces like MultipleChat (one Stripe subscription, one line on the statement, cancel anytime in-app).
FAQ
Wrong-charge questions.
I was charged twice in one month. What do I do?
A duplicate charge is a billing error — refundable regardless of the general policy. Screenshot both charges, note the dates, and report via the Help Center chat (or Apple/Google if store-billed). These are routinely approved.
Someone used my card to buy ChatGPT. Chargeback?
Report to the biller first — OpenAI, Apple and Google all have unauthorized-charge investigations and refund verified fraud. Go to your bank if the biller stonewalls or the fraud is broader than one merchant.
Will a chargeback get my account banned?
Very likely, yes — platforms treat chargebacks on self-made purchases as friendly fraud and close the account. Reserve disputes for genuine fraud or a biller that refuses to engage.
My kid subscribed without asking. Refundable?
Yes — treat it as an accidental/unauthorized purchase and report it fast. Apple in particular has a well-worn path for children's purchases; OpenAI handles it under the accidental-purchase exception within 14 days.
